Hofstra’s Inaugural Women in Leadership Symposium Inspires and Empowers | News

Hofstra University recently hosted its inaugural Women in Leadership Symposium, bringing together accomplished female professionals, students, and alumnae to discuss leadership, resilience, and breaking barriers. Organized by the Hofstra University Women in Leadership Advisory Board, the symposium served as a platform to celebrate women’s achievements and provide valuable mentorship opportunities.

In welcoming attendees, Hofstra President Susan Poser praised the work of the Women in Leadership Advisory Board. “I am consistently impressed with your commitment to showing up for our students, mentoring young women, showing them what it takes, and being willing to pull them up behind you. Thank you for making this endeavor a priority  ̶  and for your commitment to future leaders. I hope that you realize that as alumnae, your success and professionalism in each of your careers are critically important for Hofstra’s future because they reflect back on us, and they advance the University’s name and reputation.”

The event featured Priscilla Almodovar ’87, president and CEO of Fannie Mae, as the keynote speaker. In an insightful fireside chat with Dr. Janet Lenaghan, dean of the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, Almodovar shared her journey from Hofstra to leading one of the nation’s most influential financial institutions. She spoke about her early career, the challenges she faced as a Latina woman in finance, and the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and mentorship in professional success.

Almodovar reflected on the persistent gender disparities in executive roles, noting that while the numbers are improving, progress remains slow. “There is a lot of work still to be done, but a lot of progress has been made. … I look forward to the day when we’re not asking about the first [woman in a high position] anymore,” she stated. Almodovar emphasized that breaking barriers isn’t just about individual success  ̶  it’s about creating systemic change so that women are no longer seen as exceptions in leadership positions.

Almodovar emphasized the critical role of women in supporting and uplifting one another in leadership. Reflecting on her own journey, she shared how mentorship and advocacy from other women shaped her career, adding, “Every single position I have had in my career, including Hofstra University, there was a woman at the center of it. Every single one.” Almodovar encouraged women to push forward, advocate for themselves, and support one another to ensure that the next generation inherits a more inclusive and equitable professional landscape.

The symposium continued with a series of breakout sessions designed to provide practical insights and strategies for professional advancement. The panelists, all successful Hofstra alumnae, shared their experiences navigating corporate spaces and offered actionable advice for aspiring leaders. From shaping workplace culture and overcoming obstacles, to building a personal brand and growing networks, the sessions allowed attendees to engage with industry leaders, share personal experiences, and gain actionable advice.

The event concluded with a networking luncheon, where attendees participated in meaningful conversations about career growth. Hosted during Women’s History Month, Hofstra’s first Women in Leadership Symposium reaffirmed the University’s commitment to empowering women and fostering a new generation of confident, impactful leaders.
