IMPERIAL COUNTY — What started with one child’s heartfelt comment has grown into a powerful show of support for educators across Imperial County. Legacy MD Medical Group recently completed the delivery of school supply bags to 180 teachers in underserved school districts, including Seeley Union Elementary, Heber Elementary, Holtville Unified, Meadows Union, and Calipatria Unified.

The inspiration came from 11-year-old Jordyn, a Seeley student and regular patient at Vo Neighborhood Medical Clinic, who was thrilled after being gifted mechanical pencils and other office items during a visit. Her simple but profound remark—
“Wow! I wish my teachers had supplies like this!”
—resonated deeply with Dr. Tien Vo and the staff at Legacy MD.
“To see how something as mundane as a shelf of office supplies could evoke such wonder—it was a powerful reminder,” said Dr. Vo. “Many of our students and teachers go without basic tools, and that’s something we can change.”
Each school supply bag contained pens, pencils, highlighters, tissues, and a full ream of copy paper—essentials that many teachers often purchase out-of-pocket. The project was spearheaded by Chuck Fisher, Legacy MD’s Education Liaison, who worked with schools and volunteers to ensure distribution to the educators who needed them most.
The response from educators was overwhelming.
Ricardo Figueroa, a 4th-grade teacher at Meadows Union Elementary, shared his appreciation:
“A genuine and sincere thank you to Legacy MD Medical Group for the gift bags. Dr. Vo and I go a long way—he was my dad’s doctor and took care of him very well. I just want to give him a big thumbs up for that. Thank you.”
Carlos Carreno, a 1st-grade reading teacher at Meadows Union, added:
“We’re always in need of supplies, so this will really help us at the beginning of the school year. I appreciate Dr. Vo and Chuck for coming out to our school. Our students need to aim high in their education—and Dr. Vo’s story about coming from a farm worker family really resonates here. Many of our families come from the same background, and hearing his success is incredibly inspiring. A strong education and a strong spiritual life can take these kids far.”

Calipatria Unified Superintendent Angelita Ortiz was among several school leaders who expressed thanks:
“Thank you, thank you, thank you for these bags and for always appreciating our staff,” Ortiz said.
Esmeralda Diaz, CEO of Legacy MD Medical Group, emphasized the organization’s commitment to education:
“Educators do so much with so little. By providing even basic supplies, we’re telling them: we see you, we value your work, and we’re here to support you. When we lift up our teachers, we uplift our students and our future.”
The campaign is just the latest example of Legacy MD’s mission to support the underserved—making sure every child, and every educator, has the tools they need to succeed.
